First National Bank of Evansville (The 420 Building)(1970)
A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new First National Bank of Evansville took place on December 15, 1967 on the site of the Old National Bank and Hotel Lincoln. Completed in 1970, the First National Bank of Evansville stands at 18 stories and is strongly characterized by dark-tinted glass that contrasts with thin, white steel mullions; a massing plan similar to a column with a massive base, delicate column section of glass, and embellished cap with a cornice-like loggia at the top story; and, a strongly articulate elevator shaft on the south side. The base is a five story parking garage. The entire plan for the building
recalls the Bank Building Corporation’s design for the First National Bank of Mobile (1965) <link>, though here it is completed in sleeker materials that likely resulted in greater construction efficiency as well as an overall more modern aesthetic. Co-designer was Kelley-Marshall & Associates of Tulsa, OK. Contractor for the building was Industrial Contractors, Inc.
The building remained the home of Old National Bank through 2004, one of the largest banks based in Indiana. Today, the building is used as office space and is known as The 420 Building for its address on Main Street.
